The Healing Power of the Arts Fund

Burke Rehabilitation is committed to The Healing Power of the Arts. Since 2017, a concentrated effort has been in place to increase the presence of art throughout our inpatient hospital and our outpatient facilities.

When selecting artwork for healthcare environments, it is important to be mindful of the patient population and the general environment in which treatment is being given,” explains Jodi Moise, Director of The Fine Art Program and Collection at Montefiore Medicine, including at Burke.. “For Burke, the theme of ‘movement’ guides all curatorial selections.

Art also is part of our Therapeutic Recreation program where specially trained therapists use art to improve a patient’s movement, strength and dexterity.

In 2021, Burke partnered with MedRhythms. to provide a cutting-edge and innovative Neurologic Music Therapy program to our patients. Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is an evidence-based treatment model that uses standardized, research-based techniques to treat the brain using specific elements of music such as rhythm, melody, dynamics, tempo, etc.

NMT provides specific, individualized, and standardized interventions for those affected by neurologic injury or disease and encompasses neurologic rehabilitation and neurogeriatric therapy.

It looks at music through a neuroscience lens and uses standardized interventions to help people recover movement, speech, language, and cognition. The benefits of Neurological Music Therapy are numerous and have been documented in multiple research studies.

These programs are made possible only through the generous support of our donors. To insure their continuance and expansion, The Healing Power of the Arts Fund was established.

Proceeds from the 2024 Burke Award Dinner will support Burke’s outstanding and innovative rehabilitative services and the Healing Power of the Arts Fund.

Make a difference.
