Driver Evaluation Program
Illness, injury or aging can impact your ability to drive safely. Ensure you or your loved one can continue driving or get back behind the wheel through Burke’s Driver Evaluation Program, offered in four outpatient locations throughout the New York Metro Area.
Benefits of a Driving Evaluation
Work directly with a trained occupational therapist (OT) to measure your driving skills. The full evaluation includes an in-vehicle test done separately. Once completed, it can help:
- Assess your ability to safely drive a car
- Determine if adjustments, such as vehicle modifications, are necessary
- Recommend ways to strengthen driving skills
- Provide options if driving is no longer possible
What to Expect
Identify if any changes are affecting your driving ability with a thorough evaluation, which is typically done in two parts:
- An in-clinic assessment. Using the latest technology, an OT will assess skills such as: vision, cognition, physical abilities, reaction time, judgment and problem solving. This is done at one of Burke's local outpatient clinics in Westchester.
2. A driving test. Based on that performance, your OT may then refer you to a local driving school, where a certified driving instructor will take you for an in-car or “Behind the Wheel” test.
Eligibility
Assessing your driving skills is helpful as you get older as well as if you or a loved one experienced/are experiencing conditions such as:
